Custom EHR Template Install Process

To install templates from an email on desktop computers, follow these steps:

  1. Access the email with the attached template(s). Note that the template(s) will be compressed into a single zip file.

  2. Depending on the mail service you use, the method of getting the zip file from the email to your computer may vary.
    You may start by first trying to drag and drop the file to your computer Desktop or a specific Folder directly from the email.
    If the mail client you are using doesn’t allow you to drag and drop, you can double-click the attached zip located in the email. One of three things will happen at this point:

    a. The file will automatically unpack into the Downloads folder.

    b. The file will automatically unpack to the computer's Desktop.

    c. The mail service (such as Gmail) will make you download the zip file before unpacking it. If this happens the zip file will need to be located and unpacked manually. By default, all downloaded files go to the Downloads folder, unless the computer has been intentionally set to download files to another specified directory.

  1. Once the zip file has been extracted (either automatically or manually) you will see a folder with the same name as the zip file. Double-click to open this folder, which will contain the .itpl template files. In instances where there is only one template attached, the zip file may unpack directly to the .itpl file.

  1. Double-click each template file to bring up the install prompt.

    You can also select all template files within the folder by using Cammand+A, or holding the Command key while selecting each template file, then drag the group of files to the MacPractice icon in the Dock to bring up the installer for all templates at once.

The install prompt window will also allow the user to view an interactive preview of the template before installing. Switch to the preview tab to interact with the form before installing into MacPractice. Click the Install button to add this template to the database. MacPractice will confirm that the template was imported correctly.

  1. You will then simply click ‘Install’ and the template will import into the database. Once complete, you can then access the template from any computer or iPad on your network with the MacPractice program or apps installed on the iPad and can begin testing or using the template for patient forms.

    You can verify that the new templates have been installed by:

    1. Going to the EHR ability in MacPractice and

    2. Select and expand the Templates folder in the sidebar. If you still don't see your templates, select the Reload button in the MacPractice toolbar.

It is recommended to drag and drop the zip attachment from your email to your desktop, or a folder of your choice, or that you save the email containing the template in order to have the file in the event that it needs to be reimported for any reason.

Please note that while your forms are in a continued state of development it is our official recommendation that you not use these forms on any actual patients within your MacPractice database and rather only use them on "Test" patients until the project is completely finished. Not following this guideline could result in the loss of patient data which MacPractice cannot help you recover.

The Templates Node in the EHR Ability can be used to archive the template from the database if needed.
