Patient Education Resources
To create a Patient Education record, select the Patient Education Resources node in References.
Click the plus button to add a new Patient Education Resource record. Enter a title and a description. Next, set the parameters upon which the resource will prompt, then check the Enabled checkbox. Save the record in the Edit menu with Save Record, or use the Command-S keyboard shortcut.
Patient Education Resources require qualifications to trigger. Create a new qualification with the plus button to the right of the Qualifications box. Within the Select Type menu, choose a qualification type which defines the patient attribute which requires education, such as Diagnosis, Medications, Procedures, and so on. A qualification can be set based on any combination of these options. Each type will give additional controls after you select it.
The following example demonstrates creating an educational resource for hypertension patients over the age of 65.
First set the
Select Type menu to Diagnosis.
This will bring up an additional menu in which to specify whether this education resource will include patients who have the selected diagnosis codes (contains), or patients without that diagnosis (does not contain). In this example, select a Diagnosis that "contains".
Next, click the
Select Diagnosis button. This will bring up a window to select which codes to include in the qualification.
Search for "hypertension" in the resulting search window, then select the Include checkbox for all hypertensive diagnoses. The search field can also be used to narrow the list of diagnoses results. Select all the necessary codes, then click the OK button.
Next, set the
Age parameter.
Click the plus sign to the right of the diagnosis qualification line to add an additional qualification. In this example, choose Age from the Select Type menu. Next, specify this resource should only be used for patients over the age of 65 by selecting "is older than" from the menu and adding the specific age to the field.
Once the parameters are set, save the record from the Edit menu by choosing Save Record, or use the Command-S keyboard shortcut.
To create an Education Resource for patients with hypertension and diabetes, we would not simply select the diabetes codes in addition to the hypertension codes in step 2. This would activate the resource for any patients with diabetes or hypertension. Instead, create an additional parameter, and include the diabetes diagnosis codes, as shown below.
The figure above shows that the patient must have at least one match on each qualification row. Each row can have multiple items of a single type associated to it, but the patient only has to match at least one item on each row. To set up a resource that will only be available if the patient has both items associated to him/her, specify this on two separate rows.
The Education Resource reference can be used in many different ways. Please review the Clinical Alert documentation if you would like more examples of how this feature could be utilized.
Once you enter records for the Patient Education tab, gather reporting data from the Patient Specific Education Resources report. Patients must also have appropriate office visit codes to appear in this report.
