Log in Error Guide

This article was written prior to Build 11 and the Server Management App. Some existing troubleshooting advice was written with the Database Connection Settings drawer in mind, and much of that functionality in Build 11 was replaced with the Server Management App.

This table lists the Log In Error messages MacPractice may display, along with potential resolutions. If the suggested resolution does not correct the issue, contact MacPractice Support (877-220-8418) for assistance.

There was an error logging in. Please try again. There was an error logging into macpractice on [server IP] as [DB Username]. Please try to log in again. | Check your Database Connection Settings drawer, and confirm the correct server IP and Database Name. If the error persists, please contact MacPractice Support. |
Incorrect username or password. | The username entered does not exist, or the password entered does not match the username. Confirm the information is correct, and try to log in again. Check to make sure the Caps Lock key is not lit on your keyboard, as passwords are commonly case-sensitive. |
User is not unique. There is more than one user with the user id [UserId], [Username]. It is not allowed to have more than one user with the same username. Log in as an administrator, or a privileged account, and change the username of one of these accounts. | There are multiple accounts with the same username or user ID. Log in as an administrative user and change the username on one of the accounts. |
Failed to connect to database. The MacPractice server could not connect to the database macpractice on [server IP]. User already logged in. This user is already logged in. The user [username] is already logged in from [computer IP]. Only one person may be logged in at a time with each username. The server did not respond. Could not connect to the MacPractice server. Confirm the server computer is running and that you can log in to MacPractice on the server. You may need to restart MacPractice on the client or restart the client computer. If you are still unable to log in, you may need to open port 1234 on the MacPractice server's firewall. | This error indicates the MacPractice client is not able to communicate with the MacPractice server. Check the Database Connection Settings drawer, and confirm you have the correct server IP, then try to log in again. If you are still unable to log in, confirm you have an active network connection on both the MacPractice Server and MacPractice Client computer. MacPractice needs to communicate over ports 3306 and 1234 to log in successfully on the internal network. The ports should remain blocked to the wider Internet. A VPN should be used to access MacPractice from outside the office. |
The server did not respond. Please verify the settings in the drawer are correct. You may need to restart the MacPractice Application, or restart the server computer. If the previous steps do not solve the issue, you may need to open port 1234 on the server computer. | This error indicates the MacPractice client is not able to communicate with the MacPractice server. Check your Database Connection Settings drawer, and confirm you have the correct server IP, then try to log in again. If you are still unable to log in, confirm you have an active network connection on both the MacPractice Server and MacPractice Client computer. On the MacPractice server, open the Database Connection Settings drawer. Click "Server Settings" and verify that the Server IP Address, DB Username and DB Password are correct. Save any changes and log in. If there were no changes, or you still can't log in, restart the server computer. | The DB Username or DB Password in the Database Connection Settings drawer are incorrect. Server settings have not been saved. The server's db access settings have not been saved. On the MacPractice server, open the Database Connection Settings drawer. Click Server settings and verify that the Server IP Address, DB Username and DB Password are correct. Server could not start MySQL Server. The MacPractice server, [server IP], could not start the MySQL server. The MySQL server is not running on the server computer. Please try to log in a second time. If that doesn't work, try restarting the server computer. | This can generally be resolved by restarting the MacPractice server computer. If that does not resolve the issue, you'll need to contact MacPractice Support for further assistance. |
The database does not exist. The database with the name macpractice on [server IP] does not seem to exist. Check to make sure you have the correct database name entered into the drawer. If the name is correct, try to log in to MacPractice on the server computer. This will create it as a new database if it does not exist. | Check the Database Connection Settings drawer, and confirm the correct database name is entered. If you are on a MacPractice client computer, check the database name listed in the Database Connection Settings drawer on the MacPractice on the server, and confirm the server can log in to the specified database.
