VideoGlide Guide

VideoGlide is a third-party video and image capture application for macOS. VideoGlide is compatible with all UVC devices, which covers most intraoral cameras, but it is also compatible with a number of video/photo devices that are NOT UVC compliant, such as the Dr. Cam from Telesystems. VideoGlide can be set up to work with MacPractice DR via an auto-import folder.

Purchase and/or Install VideoGlide

VideoGlide is available as a temporary free trial, so you and the client can download and install it to test it out and see how it works with the client's device. In addition, the VideoGlide trial app can be a useful tool in troubleshooting cases where MacPractice is failing to work with a UVC-compliant intraoral camera.

The VideoGlide software can be obtained from the echoFX VideoGlide page. To purchase VideoGlide, click on the "BUY" link on the right, under the header "ONLINE STORE". To download the trial, click on the Download button to the left of the Buy button, with a large red down arrow on it.

Note that it is generally recommended to uninstall and reinstall VideoGlide when moving from the trial version to the registered version. While it should be fine, and most of the issues that were found were with older versions of MacPractice, there have been documented cases of the trial version causing issues after having expired and/or having been activated to the full version.

Once the software has been purchased, echoFX will send an email to the client containing the serial number used for activation.

Installation for both the trial and full versions are the same: use the same download link mentioned above (with the large red down arrow, under the Online Store header on the right side of the VideoGlide website) and run the installer once it has downloaded. If you have purchased a serial number, you can put it in to activate the software, if not, you can proceed with the trial. VideoGlide will prompt to install the video drivers, and request the system admin password. At the end of the installation, you will need to reboot the computer.

Configuring VideoGlide

Connect your Intraoral Camera and open the VideoGlide application from the Applications folder. Select "VideoGlide" from the Digitizers menu.

If you are planning to use VideoGlide as your DR Image Capture application, and not just troubleshooting, or are using a Dr. Cam device, you will need to also complete the following:

Next, open VideoGlide Capture>Preferences. In the Snapshot Button menu, choose "Snapshot with Auto-Name" and click OK. Then, choose Snapshot>Snapshot Auto-Name Setup and select a destination folder for the captured images.

In MacPractice, go to Preferences>Digital Radiography>General and add the "Auto Snapshot Folder" from VideoGlide as an auto-import folder, and enable it.

VideoGlide Errors

If the client has VideoGlide, or you are using VideoGlide to troubleshoot, the application will give you a solid-color video feed to indicate an issue:

  • Red indicates that no VideoGlide compatible device is available. Ensure that the camera is connected, and that no other applications are open and trying to use it. Make sure MacPractice and Photo Booth have been quit.

  • Yellow indicates that the device is not receiving enough power. Try unplugging other unused USB devices, or using a powered USB hub if available.

  • Green indicates that there is no video feed. Check with the device manual to see if the device has a button on it which switches the feed on or off.

  • Purple indicates a USB error. This can happen if there is insufficient USB bandwidth available for the device. This should not be a problem with USB3 ports, but could be a problem if there are external hard drives active at the same time as the camera on USB 2.0 ports. Try unplugging any extra, unused USB devices and try again.
